Problems controlling emotions such as sadness, anger, and even happiness, are common. And sometimes people impulsively do things they regret when they are in emotional states. This study is trying to understand how brain activity is related to these problems. The study takes place in one or two visits. On the first visit you will meet with a trained research assistant who will ask you a series of questions about mental health symptoms and substance abuse problems, as well as medical illnesses. This takes 3-4 hours. Eligible participants will then come back for a second visit and have an fMRI brain imaging scan. You will fill out questionnaires about symptoms and prior traumatic experiences, take a urine drug screen, take a breathalyzer test, and those of child-bearing potential will take a urine pregnancy test. The entire visit lasts 2-3 hours: 1 hour for the brain scan and about 1-2 hours for the rest.
Seeking adults 18-65 with:
- Bipolar disorder OR borderline personality disorder
- No internal metal & no major medical conditions
Individuals who qualify and participate will be compensated for their time.
